Artist Statement

Already at the beginning of IB Art, I was considering to establish and work with the form and shapes of the human body. Through my artwork, I wish to portray different types of bodies from various perspectives. Nude bodies reveal the true, natural form of a human being, in its most vulnerable state, being completely displayed as it is, without anything covering it from the world. Working with nude bodies also reveals the beauty of how unique, individual and various humans are, which interests me a lot, for also in psychology I am greatly interested in people themselves, why they are the way they are.

Previously, I have worked with oil paint, charcoal and acrylic paint. With charcoal, I could establish the contrast between the background and the body, and emphasize the form and the muscles/ shapes within the body. I have painted bodies realistically, however in the future I seek to emphasize the flaws and distort them. I have researched Egon Schiele, Lucian Freud, Jenny Seville and others. They all approach the human form similarly yet differently, it’s interesting to see, how different people view and approach the human form in different ways. Egon Schiele and Lucian Freud both painted figures who were personally connected to them or where in their environment (usually family members), I will also want to paint and express through personal connections.

In future works, I will seek inspiration from different body forms, add personal connections from family, as well as experiment with colors and media I will use, to see how these varied, portray the body in different ways.
